Topic Tuesday: favorites of 2018
Today's #topictues is:
Favorite polishes you wore in 2018
I always do a favorites list at the end of the year, so answering this just requires doing a little early figuring about what's likely to be on that list. I did a first half top 10 at the end of June, and I've got a candidates list compiled for the second half. I'm not going to narrow it down past a top ten (or so) - you'll still have to wait for the actual end of the year for that - but I can do a sort of a draft shortlist now. (It may be subject to change later on, of course!)
Here's what I came up with for an eleven-month favorites list:
(This is good because it makes me think about this with almost a month to go, rather than waiting til the last minute like I usually do! I might actually have time to re-wear some of these...)

Tag Tuesday - indie polish quiz
This isn't a "topic Tuesday" but it seems to fit in with that!
1. What was the very first indie polish that you purchased?
Chirality. I talked about this not long ago.
2. What's an indie polish lemming that you want but have never been able to get your hands on?
I try not to get fixated on lemmings. I just don't have the budget to pay for rare stuff. I'd rather spend my money on things that are reasonably easy to get hold of.
3. Name an indie polish you bought because of a YouTuber.
Probably the first one like that was Dollish Halloween polishes because of MissHollyBerries.
4. What is your favorite and least favorite type of indie polish (holo, multichrome, flakie, etc.)?
Well, I have to go with thermal for "least favorite" not because I have anything against them - I think they're beautiful - but because I keep my nails pretty short and I just don't get good results. It's a waste of money for me. Favorite: probably flakies. Love, love, love them, and I am so happy everybody's started doing them again.
5. Name an indie polish that fits your personality to a "T”.
Elderberry from Nail Pattern Boldness - cool colors and microglitter.
6. What indie polish company do you wish you owned every bottle/collection from?
Like with the lemmings, I just don't have the budget to buy whole collections. Luckily on this one I don't have to fight myself because I am absolutely not a completeist. I generally have no interest in owning whole collections - I just pick and choose the ones I really like. (Very occasionally "the ones I really like" in a collection will be all of them - but I've only found two like that in the years I've been collecting polish.)
7. Name an indie polish that physically made your jaw drop when you saw it.
The multichromes, when they first came out. I'm not sure exactly what would have been the first one I saw.
8. What do you look for the most when you purchase an indie (perfect formula, amazing color, affordability)?
Affordability is always nice but I would say what I really look for is a combination of amazing color and amazing formula.
9. What direction would you like to see indie polish go in?
I get bored when everybody is going the same direction - like, I know everybody loves holos and they sell really well, but I got so sick of the endless scattered holos the last couple of years, and eventually they all start looking alike. Do your own thing! whatever that may be.
(In case somebody is wondering, I picked this picture more or less completely randomly - I just was looking for something in my old pictures with an indie polish logo on it, and this was the first one I found!)

Favorites, first half of 2018
Half-year top 10:
I didn't decide on a single favorite but I decided I had a top 3: Always Be A Dragon, Enchanted, and Feel The Chemis-tree. I won't make myself narrow things down more than that til the end of the year.
My only rule for my yearly favorites list is that they have to be things I haven't worn before this year. I've bought a ton of polish lately so that leaves me lots of candidates. I try to keep good records of what I've worn - and I've been doing really well on that lately, in general, but sometimes I fall down on the job and I'm not quite sure. So the big list below is my best guess.

So I think this is pretty rounded in some senses - some mainstream, some indies, and Pretty Serious, which I'd call a boutique brand - not really an indie in the strictest sense because not hand-mixed, but close. There's some glittery stuff, a holo, a flakie, a unicorn-pee-type thing, and a couple that are more or less top-coats. No cremes, which is par for the course for me. (I almost put Bitter Buddhist in, but I didn't.) Kind of a lot of purple, also typical.

I keep forgetting to check and see what the #topictues question is, but this week I did remember, and the question for this week is about backup bottles. I don't buy backup bottles a whole lot, but sometimes when something I really like is being discontinued and it's marked down, I'll get one. And a few times I've gotten already-discontinued things on eBay or Amazon, if I find them at a reasonable price.
I don't have really good records of what I have backups of, partly because sometimes I decide to give them away and then I forget that I did that. But here's the ones I'm sure I have two of, by brand.

I have a list of every polish I could figure out that I wore for the first time in 2017 - I feel like there are things missing, but in some cases I think it's just polishes I bought and haven't actually worn. Although I've added a couple that got left out the first time. And the polish descriptions are from memory so may not be entirely accurate!

Favorites, first half of 2017
This year is already half over, amazingly, so I thought I'd make up a shortlist of first-half favorites, and save myself work in December when I start working on my yearly favorites list. I came up with 14 polishes that I really liked - they are not necessarily new releases but were new to me. And then I narrowed it down to my very favorites, five of them.
In alpha order by brand - although I will say that if I had to pick one favorite off the top of my head right now, I'd go with Das Esspensive.

Nothing but lists
It's pretty slow at work tonight, so I was looking around at Zoyas and also poking around my recent stash posts (Zoya, Sinful Colors, & Sally Hansen) and thinking about what I might destash. So here's two lists: (1) the Zoyas I might buy, and (2) things I might destash (some of which I may send to Zoya for recycling, which is the nominal point of the Earth Day promo, after all).
My birthday is coming up and I had told Rob I wanted a certain rather expensive new bag - but I can't find exactly what I want and I may just give up on that and get nail polish instead. (My old bag is still perfectly usable and I still like it, so why do I need a new one, right?) So given that, I might splurge a little more on Zoyas. (Earlier I said I wasn't buying more than six, but now I've caved a bit - EIGHT. That's still the maximum. Anything more than that is ridiculous given how many I already have.) And the other thing is I might get some stuff from Sephora, because the semi-annual VIB sale is coming up - I got a code in the mail. That part might be something other than nail polish, though.
So list #1 is possible Zoya purchases (this is two sublists, actually, Pixie Dusts and not-Pixie-Dusts):

This is that Mystery Trio which includes Charlotte. Charlotte is the palest one. I think the dark one is Anais, which might also be a destash candidate. The only one I really care about keeping is the metallic one, which I think is Severine.
Next up in the stash-by-brand queue is Pretty Serious, so I'm starting to think about destashes there, too. After that is OPI (including Sephora by OPI & Nicole by OPI). (If anybody notices and is wondering, I actually wrote this before I wrote all the Pretty Serious posts that I posted in the last few days, but then I saw that PS was having their sale over the weekend and I changed the order around because of that.)

I had a longer list but that's the short list right now. I think that was also why I haven't bought both Nyx and Vespa previously, but I think Vespa darkens down enough that it'll be ok. Nyx may too but I'm less sure about it. This may change at any time until I actually order. (But I also think that the sooner you order on the Earth Day sale, the more likely you are not to have to wait a month to get your order, as has been known to happen sometimes!)

Then I looked at pictures some more and took Nimue out again, mostly because it showed definite brushstrokes in several pictures, and I don't need any more of that aggravation in my life - or at least, let's say, I have to really love a polish to be willing to put up with brushstrokes, and Nimue didn't pass that test! And then last of all, I took Maria-Luisa out because I just have so many gold top-coats already. This one said "cellophane" and that sounds awesome but I just couldn't quite talk myself into it. I was also waffling a bit on Destiny but I left that in. So I ended up with Destiny, Stevie, Vespa, Anaka, Mimi, and Logan. (Tangentially: I know Logan can be a girl's name too but all I can think of is Wolverine. That's throwing me off - but not enough to keep me from ordering it just the same.) And then we come to the destash list. I have trouble detaching emotionally from quite a few of my polishes, I've talked about that before - but I'm making an effort. So I have the reasons why I'm destashing on this list to remind myself!

I saw this picture and I think this one is already in the destash box too - Maybelline Magenta Mirage, which as you can see is a crackle.
This particular nail crackled in an interesting way, but I could never get anything resembling consistent results over a whole manicure. (Wasn't there a question in that "unpopular opinions" tag about "trends you never got on board with"? Because maybe I should have said crackles. I wanted to like them, but somehow they never grabbed me when I actually tried them. I imagine I'm not the only one who feels that way.)

2016 favorites - the "honorable mention" category
I already showed the list of everything I've worn for the first time this year, which is the pool that I choose my favorites from. A lot of people limit themselves to polishes that were released in the current year, and I don't - but an upshot of that is that I'm more likely to have some polishes on my list that are discontinued. To a large degree, I feel like your favorites are your favorites, and it's more of a personal-preference thing - certainly giving readers new polishes to buy is secondary. But on the other hand, I know I go out and buy things that I saw on other people's favorites lists all the time, so I gave in a little on that point, and decided to separate the discontinued ones out and call this set Honorable Mentions. It's a good way to whittle down the list a little, if nothing else!
My shortlist was 19 polishes. (I took a couple off and then ended up putting a couple more back on again, and the list ultimately ended up a little bigger than I first thought it was going to be.) I did a wheel with all 19 - the 20th spot is the nail that looks like it has a stripe down the middle. It's the two sheerest polishes over black.
I know that I'm a cool-colors person, but even I kind of blinked when I looked closely at this picture. There are only maybe two polishes here that lean even the slightest bit warm. It's nearly all blues, greens, and purples. I shouldn't be surprised by that, but I was, a little bit. There's only a couple that even lean red at all. Anyway, I'll go over all of these in the next few days, but here's the first installment.

(The ones that might are Lake Louise, Excuse Me I Blurpled, and maybe Who Ya Gonna Call? But I don't really think I would have put those that high, ultimately.)

Indie Halloween options
It's probably kind of late to be ordering Halloween-themed nail polish, but I keep finding the cutest stuff and I can't resist talking about some of it. First of all, I think everybody in the nail-polish world pretty much knows about Simply Nailogical by now (ok, I didn't until relatively lately, but still I'm assuming you are ahead of me on this); she has a video in which she shows an adorable Starrily holo glitter which she collaborated on:
(I think of Christine of SN as kind of being the Bunny of the nail polish world - and yeah, Bunny herself does make occasional forays into talking about nail polish but it's not really her main thing. Christine is kind of goofy and irreverent like Bunny, not to mention is heavily followed like Bunny - so they seem sort of alike to me.) (2.8 million followers as opposed to 7.7 million for Bunny - I just checked - but still, we're talking millions for each of them!)
Enough about that, on to other Halloween polishes - I'm just going to provide links to some indie sellers that have Halloween collections and let you poke around for yourself, ok? - Pahlish has more nice holos as well as a September LE which still seems to be available

Polish for the holidays
This is not really a stash post - well, it is part of my stash, but it's not part of my ongoing series of stash posts, because this is not everything I have in these colors. This is more an idea post about what to wear for the holidays, if you want to go for a holiday theme - and what to buy, if you need to buy something. (But this is just what I had already, I wasn't thinking about what was easily available when I picked these out!)
Reds (and golds) - Honestly, I think the lesson of this picture is that all reds tend to look pretty much alike from a distance. Some of these are very glittery and some are cremes, and on the nail they may look a little lighter or darker or more shimmery - and there's everything in here from $2 drugstore polishes to $20 high-end ones - but at arm's length, red is red. (Even Posh, the matte on the top row, looks pretty similar to the rest of these if you put top coat on it.) I didn't put any oxbloods or anything that leans really purple in here, those would look more different. As for the golds, oddly, they tend to look very different on the nail a lot of the time even if they look similar in the bottle. I guess it's the metallic component - some are mixed metals, some are brassy, etc. But still from a distance, people are just going to think, gold, unless you've done something very subtle with it like a glitter fade.

There's more noticeable differences between the greens. I was trying to pick "Christmas" greens, things in the emerald/forest range, but still, there's just more noticeable differences between these, to me. I think it's at least partially just the way I picked the reds, because to me a real holiday red means something within a very small range, where there's more leeway on the greens.
Here's some more things from my stash that are very "holiday" but didn't make it into these two pictures (most of the silver ones are in this post):

Y'all Come Back Ya Hear
I think I mentioned a couple of entries back that I had bought some 1/2 price OPIs from Sleek Nail - well, they came extremely quickly and I am wearing one of them now and I'm very satisfied with that purchase. I bought 2 polishes from the Texas collection from a couple of years ago, Houston We Have A Purple (which does not appear to be purple at all but more like a berry) and Y'all Come Back Now Ya Hear? (a very bright orange) - both of these are what OPI called "sorbets" but which seem to me to pretty much be jellies in my limited experience here. I just did a jelly sandwich with YCBNYH and Sinful Gilded which is very pretty - I did 2 coats of the OPI, 1 of Gilded and another YCBNYH coat on top of that. There's still some visible nail line even after that many coats but I can deal with it.
Added: I posted the two iPhone pictures below and then I found this picture on the memory card of my camera, which I seems to be the same manicure, and which looks considerably more like I feel like the manicure actually looked. I usually only take pictures with the Canon when I have daylight; the iPhone pictures tend to be taken whenever I think of taking them and have any kind of decent light, which in this case was under the fluorescents at work. So I'm sure that accounts for a lot of the difference. (The Canon is about 10 years old; it's an old A510 with a whoppin' 3.2 MP. So I'm not sure saying it's a "better" camera than the iPhone is entirely accurate. It does have things like a macro setting that the iPhone does not, though.)
The other thing I bought was Here Today Aragon Tomorrow which is on my unofficial lemming list and has been for ages. (It's unofficial because I never have made an "official" one. There's no list anywhere except in my head. I try not to obsess about polishes I don't have, there are too many of them!)
I do have another type of list going that I've never made before, though, and that's a shortlist for Favorite Polishes of 2014. I've never done a yearly favorites list before because I've just never been organized enough. But the other day I went through blog entries and compiled a (fairly long) list of things I loved, and then cut that list down to a smaller one - I'll have to wait and see what I wear in December that I fall in love with before I can get any further than that. I'll probably do a top 10, I imagine, if I can decide on ten. (I do think I know what my polish of the year is, unless something comes along to bump it off - but I'm obviously not going to tell you now.) I decided my criteria was going to be that it had to be something that I wore for the first time in 2014, rather than something that was released or that I bought in 2014, just because that's easier to track, mostly. I don't care about when things were released, and limiting it to things I actually bought in 2014 cut out most of what I wore in January and half of what I wore in February, which seemed silly - especially since I never did a favorites of 2013.
Karen was kind enough to send me a couple of sets of Salon Effects nail polish strips to try out - I have never tried the strips so it's going to be interesting to see how I like those. They are, let's see (I had to find where they put the names!) - Wicked Bamboo, a sort of neutral stripe, and Running Wild, which is a tiger-print, looks like.
(This may be my last "fall" manicure - we'll see, but I've been eyeing the Christmas colors. Aragon next, probably.)

So I'm not sure saying it's a "better" camera than the iPhone is entirely accurate. It does have things like a macro setting that the iPhone does not, though.)

The other thing I bought was Here Today Aragon Tomorrow which is on my unofficial lemming list and has been for ages. (It's unofficial because I never have made an "official" one. There's no list anywhere except in my head. I try not to obsess about polishes I don't have, there are too many of them!)
I do have another type of list going that I've never made before, though, and that's a shortlist for Favorite Polishes of 2014. I've never done a yearly favorites list before because I've just never been organized enough. But the other day I went through blog entries and compiled a (fairly long) list of things I loved, and then cut that list down to a smaller one - I'll have to wait and see what I wear in December that I fall in love with before I can get any further than that. I'll probably do a top 10, I imagine, if I can decide on ten. (I do think I know what my polish of the year is, unless something comes along to bump it off - but I'm obviously not going to tell you now.) I decided my criteria was going to be that it had to be something that I wore for the first time in 2014, rather than something that was released or that I bought in 2014, just because that's easier to track, mostly. I don't care about when things were released, and limiting it to things I actually bought in 2014 cut out most of what I wore in January and half of what I wore in February, which seemed silly - especially since I never did a favorites of 2013.
Karen was kind enough to send me a couple of sets of Salon Effects nail polish strips to try out - I have never tried the strips so it's going to be interesting to see how I like those. They are, let's see (I had to find where they put the names!) - Wicked Bamboo, a sort of neutral stripe, and Running Wild, which is a tiger-print, looks like.
(This may be my last "fall" manicure - we'll see, but I've been eyeing the Christmas colors. Aragon next, probably.)
